The Millennial Generation... That is what we are. Ages 12-29 fall into this category. We are said by some to be extremely different from any generation that has preceded us. We are enormous, 1.1 Billion or 17% of the entire world population are in this generation with us. We are also more ethnically diverse than ever before with 18.5% Hispanic, 14.2% are black, 4.3% are Asian, 3.2% are mixed race or other, and 59.8%, a record low, are white. They say that we are more radically and culturally tolerant and accepting of all walks of life. With that said, the majority of the millennial generation is culturally liberal with many favoring liberal stances. Expression and acceptance has been highly important to us. We live life on the edge, not only testing the boundaries but more so coming up with new boundaries all together. If we are unsatisfied with something we simply move along to find something new that we may devour. They also say that we expect too much. We want everything done within the minute that we ask of it. We demand respect and recognition. We only know how to take “Yes” for an answer and our priorities are simple. We come first. In the work place we respond better to “Coaching” as opposed to “Bossing”. We do not settle for less because we know that we have options. We know nothing of failure. Our lifestyles and friends tend to be ahead on our priority list than our jobs or schooling or dare I say it, God. We have been sold a fantasy that we can become anything that we want to and to continue dreaming of an unfathomable future. Alongside this we as Christians only know the Gospel of Celebrity. Simply being at the right place at the right time is the only way we know. We believe and think that if we can become famous, if even in only our immediate social circles, than we can and will have influence. But the truth is, and I quote, “Most of the people in history that have really influenced the world for God haven’t been that famous in their own time.” So as we seek influence and change and celebrity status... Is there any hope for us? Yes, our generation is also said to have some of the hardest workers in all history. We will stop at nothing to get what our hearts truly desire. I truly and whole heartedly believe that we have been positioned by God in our generational views. He has his will planned out and we are a part of it. 1 Peter 2:9 calls us a chosen generation in which He has called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light. I was recently in a service where the minister quoted Joel 2:28, the verse about “sons and daughters prophesying”. Acts 2:17 says it also... That is us. We are the church of last days. Our Millennial views have paved the way for us to have revival in THIS LIFE. I would challenge our generation to see the “Advantage out of the Disadvantage”. What might happen if we applied the qualities from our generation to the qualities of our Christianity? We are the church. For example, our generation being so ethnically diverse is just as the days of Jesus and the disciples. His word is to be carried out to every race. Back then it was Jews and gentiles and today it is blacks and whites both. We are more radically and culturally tolerant and accepting. So be it. Back then Jesus chose to touch the lepers and the adulterous woman. What if we chose to seek out those battling sin, habits, and addictions with love because they are people too and His message is just as much for them as it is for us. Or perhaps if all the hard work we put into our own successes would be put into our prayers for others or our sincerity to worship and praise a God who has been the ultimate sacrifice. What will you do with His truth in this life in your generation?

I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a Student Pastor Planning Session. Our meeting was filled with creative passion, and artistic vision about how to reach this generation. As we sat there with our Starbucks cups and laptops we began to collectively create our game plan for a new year. We want this year to be the freshest, hippest, sickest, most impacting year of student ministry to date. I want the best music, the best lights, the best events, and we want it to be huge. As we began to go around the table sharing our vision and burden for student’s ministry, each student leader began to recount recent conversations with some of their own students. The underlying theme of each conversation was... REAL.
You see it’s obvious that we definitely live in a media driven society. While entertainment is, and continues to be one of the fastest growing multibillion dollar industries, student ministry has found itself competing for the minds and attention of our students. Students have options. They are presented with an al a carte menu of movies, video games, magazines, mp3's, web sites, music, parties, and so much more. But even with all of this our students are starving for more. They want something REAL.
As I finished my 4 pump 2 shot white chocolate mocha, I closed my laptop with a renewed burden, and realization that I must show our students the REAL! We must bring them to the foot of a REAL cross. I must teach them a REAL truth. They must have a REAL relationship with a REAL God. I must lead them to a REAL Jesus.
